The FO team as it was in about July of 1970

E4 FO Robert Stewart calling in marking round fire mission somewhere south of Chamberlain. RTO is E4 Joe Delgato. Joe Delgato was wounded and left the field the same time as "Jodon" was wounded. The last RTO was Bill Bell. He went on to the 101st after the 9th pulled out and became a Recon...

The A Company FO team, late March, early April 1970

Left to right. Gene Cruise (spelling), E4 recon Sgt. 1st Lt. Jerry Holderness, FO, Pfc. Robert Stewart, Rto. This was taken at the dock at the Navy base at Ben Luc. I can still hear the roar of the air conditioners in the state side looking buildings. Gene Cruise, not very many days after this pictu...

Re: Back to Viet Nam Trip Reports + pictures

Thanks for posting Jerry. Old ezboards is having some problem loading tonight, or my provider is having a hard time. I don't know which. I read what you posted about your return to Vietnam and I have added a link at the "links" section. When Doc Herb, better known as Joe Snuffy sees this t...

Re: Now Yahoo lists this site.

Thanks Doc for the encouragement. I guess as long as the lights are on and a few of us are at home this site will eventually grow. I think that this format and the fact that the pop ups are paid off for at least another six months helps too. I feel certain that there are a number of guys who have lo...

Lavazzi to Olsen, COC picture by John Bullock

John took this picture while standing at attention. Probably why Top Coppeler to far right seems to be looking at him. It is 1970. John, in his email, says June or July, I think maybe late May or early June because I think Olsen came very shortly after the Cambodian thing. Capt. George Lavazzi, at t...

And Google lists it first too. I am holding my breath. Right now it still looks a lot like me having a conversation with myself.

Now Yahoo lists this site.

It not only lists this site, but if you go to their search engine and type in "6th Battalion of the 31st Infantry" it is number one on the list. Maybe if we can get some help with eventual links from the 9th site and the 31st site more will be attracted here and more will be encouraged to ...

A movie to check out, our own Band of Brothers

I guess we all have seen Band of Brothers about the 506, 101st Abn.in WWII. For those who don't know, there is a WWII movie that the 31st Infantry plays a part in. It was made during WWII and stars Robert Taylor as a tough 31st Regiment Sgt. who has to take a scrape together group of men and fight a...

John, with 4th of July coming up, how about posting the picture of the officers on the deck of the Officers Club on the 4th of July 1970? You know the one with Colonel Gearin in the middle of them watching whatever was going on on the stage below. If you don't have a place to store it and post it fr...

Re: Got a Few More Names -Delta 69'-70'

John Londsdale was part of the FO team. He had been in the FDC at Delta battery 2/4th at Can Giouc and Ben Luc before joining the FO team with Delta 6/31st infantry. His actual MOS was either 13e20 or 13A. I knew him then and remember him now. If I wrote it down right his name is on the Wall in Pane...

Goofy Grapes real name?

Somebody told me once. Was it you Jim? Goofy Grape was the nick name for the Lt. of the 2nd Platoon in mid 1970. I today got an email that brought the subject up and the writer couldn't remember either. Once I was at Tra Cu working in the TOC and was given the task of walking over to the officers ho...

Anybody experience a hearing loss?

Just before I got out of the Army I took the usual slap dash physical. A hearing loss was noted but I was told " It'll come back to you." Yeah, right.

I asked this question on another board and there were a lot of veterans who have suffered some noticeable hearing loss. Some actu...

Like what?

I collect all kinds of things. For instance; cheap flea market pocket knives that come from China or Pakistan and cost $5 or less each. Then I collect caps too: ball caps with baseball logos and company hats and club hats and special hats of all sorts. Then I collect books on old...

I knew I had forgotten something

Joe Donnelly wrote me that he would like to see the site become more of a forum for "our lives now and after the war rather than a rehashing of old events", because as he went on to say, "a lot of us could use the support".

When I opened these forums I had intended that...

Re: Into Cambodia and other books by Nolan

Nolan has another book about FSB Ripcord that was over-run in the 101st AO in the later part of 1970. I remember flying over it fairly shortly after it happened when I finished my tour with the 101st. It didn't look special, just another bald top small mountain in a sea of green covered small mounta...

You don't have to register. Just click on the reply and let us know that you have passed this way and how you got here and if you have any special interest in the 6/31st infantry or D 2/4th Arty. Or maybe just the 9th Division, or Vietnam, or whatever.

A story that comes to mind.

Jim Tierney and I have swapped a couple of emails lately. He sent me a jpg of his boonie hat. That prompts this memory. In the rainy season, outside of Gettysburg, I was with the CP of Alpha and a squad of one platoon. It was night and we moved into a November Lima. We weren't far from Gettysburg an...

I don't know when Karl Lowe got to the 6/31st but I think probably December of 1969 or maybe January of 1970. Maybe he will see this and comment. The rent is paid on this site for a while.
