The US Department of Defense spends without thinking twice....about anything.

Our proposed military budget is $660B....the defense budget of Russia and China "combined" is $300B.

We just spent $13B on an aircraft carrier...this now gives us 11 carriers....Russia has 1, China has 1, Iran has 0, and North Korea has 0...so......why the heck did we need another "slow moving, big target" carrier?

In my home town an Australian company is building half of a gaggle of a new class of "littoral" combat ship. Littoral means even with not many weapons it can cruise relatively close to shore and be a sort of utility cruiser...or target...depending on how you look at it. They cost 480 million dollars per copy. Only trouble is they aren't very reliable. New ones break down and end up in port for extended periods of time while the engine crew learns the quirks in the engine design and maintenance. My Congressman loves getting more of them on the books...jobs you know. Screw do we need them or not.
