Comfort equipment
Asside from the usual impliments of war, there were a few important comfort items.

You had to have bug juice on a night ambush.
You needed a jungle hat to keep the rain out of your face and off the back of your neck.
A poncho liner was valuable in lots of ways. Probably the most important security blanket anyone ever owned.

Any thing else you can think of?

I recall using a plastic zip-lock type bag as a pillow in the field. I believe it was meant as a gas mask bag. The zip lock may have been the first used and it worked so well that you could inflate it.

Re: Comfort equipment
Remember the green cotton sweat bands? Now they are a cliche in every Rambo style movie. They did keep the sweat out of your eyes though. I remember using one a time or two.
Joe Poole, on the left has one on in this picture.
Or...Jerry White, Delta Company.

Comfort
I don't remember the sweat bands, but we would get an oliver drab "arm sling" from the "Doc" and use it as a sweat band. Still have mine stashed away.....who know's, I might need it some day. Ha!

Also, some guys...especially our M60 guys and their A-gunners would roll up an olive drab towel and hang it around their neck.

Re: Comfort
The sweat bands that I remember weren't really "bands" in the way of a circle of cloth with elastic in them. They were green cotton, about the same kind of stuff as the t shirts were made out of. Just a strip of cloth a few inches wide and maybe two foot long. Maybe they were arm slings, but I think I got one from supply not a medic. Who knows.... we are talking ancient history here. Kind of hard remembering the details.

Re: Comfort
The head band I wore was just some paisely piece of cloth that I found somewhere (don't ask). I think I still have it somewhere in my old stuff round here somewhere - If I can find it I will scan it and post it - until then, the band on my head in this pic is it!
Re: Comfort
What about the SP Packs (That's what I remember calling them) A box sent sometimes to the unit that contained cartons of cigarettes, toilet articles, and shaving gear. Don't remember if there was anything else in them. Everyone wanted the Winstons and Marlboros, that's when I started smoking Salems and I smoked menthols until I quit smoking in the late '80s.
Who sent them and why? As usual, very hazy recall.

Re: Comfort
I remember the SP packs. I nearly chain smoked back then. What I tended to get was what was left over. Remember the term Red Balls? The cigarettes were actually Pall Malls, without the filters, but they were always left over. There were even some Lucky Strikes and Camels as well. None of these had filters.

SP
Also contained Red Man chewing tobacco. Since I didn't smoke, I figured that I should get some thing out of the SP packs so I tried this a time or two. Didn't care for that either.

I remember the Vietnamese kids would try to talk us into giving them the Salem cigarettes. They did a nice business in Salem cigarettes and used to try to get us to buy them for them at the PX.
Hammock
I still have a little nylon hammock I believe I got from the locals. I remember it felt great to catch a nap up off the ground if you could find a place to hang it.
Re: Comfort equipment
Niner, a P38 could be added to a grunt's equipment list.
