Know anybody in this photo?

Postby Niner Alpha » Thu Jul 05, 2018 3:32 pm

Third from left top row is Dennis Moss. He served in Charlie company end of 68 and for sometime in 69. At one juncture he became a sniper ..and a highly decorated one judging from his obituary. This may have been the Sniper School as a guess or...not. Anybody shed any light on where this was, who else is in the photo, and why they were getting their pictures taken?

No idea who or where or why photo was taken. But I have doubts it is a sniper school.
Moss is one of the lowest ranked men in photo, a SGT E-5, all the rest have at least one rocker
and 2 or 3 are E-7. Some of these guys seem too old to be crawling in the mud to be a sniper.
The back row far left is a Major or Lt Col, man in charge of whatever is going on??
IMHO these guys have too much rank for sniper school, and did Moss make SGT before school??
At least 2 have had previous tours of RVN and one has airborne wings.
It just doesn't seem to fit a sniper school, at least not to me.

Edit: I didn't see his obituary first. He certainly was highly decorated. Nice photo of him
with an M-14 with a Starlight Scope.

Moss ended up an E6. This may be some HQ outfit at maybe the brigade level. Can't tell for sure but a good percentage don't seem to have CIB's.

But SSgt Moss was a real hero. He was put in for a DSC and a boat load of other medals that he actually received.

Update on the photo:

Hi Robert - Thought I’d give you an update on that photo you posted on the forum. Someone pointed out the gentleman in the far left of the back row was a LTC or Major…..I zoomed in and think I can read enough letters on his name tag that it could be Gary Chittester. Gary took over command of the 9th ID sniper school after Willis Powell and was the nominating signature on my dad’s DSC nomination. I’m also told by another guy I’ve contacted that the guy two spots to the right of my dad is Adelbert Waldron, who was in the same training class as my dad and is recognized as the sniper with the most kills in the Vietnam War. All of these guys appear to have a patch on their breast pocket that is indicative of 9th ID sniper instructor status (see below). This may have been right at the end of 1969 before the sniper school moved to the 25th ID, and the 9th was recalled from Vietnam….my guess is this is a group of instructors.
