Rodney Sanders was a member of 3d Platoon D Company 6-31st Inf when he was killed in action. He was a quiet kid who joined us from the 1st Inf Div in early March 1970. His trademark was a GI green towel he wore around his neck everywhere he went. He was with the 3d Platoon throughout the fighting in Cambodia. At the time of his death he was on a night ambush patrol on 31 May 1970, only a few kilometers from FSB Washington in northwestern Hau Nghia province. The patrol was led by SSG Lou Dicerbo, the 3d Platoon Sergeant. Rodney was at the left end of the squad as it lay in ambush in the shadows waiting for someone to pass along the trail they overlooked. Unfortunately, someone saw the squad going into its position after dark and ambushed the ambushers. Two men opened up on the squad with AK-47s from the left flank, hitting Rodney in the neck as he turned to fire. He was killed instantly.
