Comment | [Ray Heltzel] PFC Roberts, Herman David - drowned 7-11-68 Private Herman David Roberts was a really nice young fella who was assigned to Danny Hayes fire team. I spent time with him the day before he drowned. Schooling the new guys is something most platoons do well and Herman was a pretty good listener. I dove for him along with several other strong swimmers until we were all exhausted. The Seals recovered Herman not far from he went under. This was a real tragedy and tough to forget. Herman was with us less than a month we we lost him. God Bless You Herman. You're in good company. His picture is in Danny Hayes pictures of the squad running.

Comment | [Ron Raymond] I had met Private Roberts while in A.I.T. at Ft. McClellan, Alabama in 1968. We arrived together at the 9th Division while being assigned to the 6/31st. Like Ray had mentioned, Roberts was not with us very long, about a month, before we lost him in the river crossing! It was a sad day for all of us for Herman to drown while in combat. I remember that day well! |
